Spectra-Physics Signs $5 Million
Supply Agreement with GSI Lumonics

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA, July 5 -- Spectra-Physics, a majority-owned subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation, has signed a supply agreement worth over $5 million with GSI Lumonics Advanced Manufacturing Systems (AMS) of Wilmington, MA. Under the agreement, Spectra-Physics will supply high-power, Q-switched lasers, based on its patented FCbar technology.

"These lasers will be incorporated into systems used primarily to trim components in semiconductor circuits for computer and wireless communications applications," said Patrick L. Edsell, chairman, president, and CEO of Spectra-Physics. "This new supply agreement reflects the continuing strength of demand for our advanced all-solid-state lasers. We have spent the last few years developing the next generation of laser systems for advanced manufacturing and materials-processing applications. These lasers are now being very well received by all players in the computer and microelectronics manufacturing equipment market."

Spectra-Physics manufactures a broad range of CW, pulsed, and ultrafast diode-pumped laser systems, in infrared, visible, and ultraviolet wavelengths.
