DALSA Corporation, a supplier of high-performance semiconductor image sensors and electronic digital cameras, has acquired Silicon Mountain Design (SMD) for $11.5 million (U.S.) SMD, located in Colorado Springs, CO, manufactures high-speed CCD cameras designed for applications such as microscopy, film scanning, and printed circuit board assembly. During the last fiscal year, SMD's total sales were around $10 million. "Silicon Mountain Design has the attributes DALSA values in its own business and has been looking for in an acquisition," said Dr. Savvas Chamberlain, DALSA's president and CEO. "It has leading-edge technology, its products are targeted at growth markets, it maintains a disciplined approach to growth, and it has a track record of profitable performance." Savvas pointed out that SMD's product line includes mega-pixel, electronic area-scan cameras that have applications in medical imaging. "The medical-imaging market, which we targeted, is currently estimated by our marketing group at $194 million and is expected to continue to grow in the next five years at an annual rate of 25 percent," Savvas added. "This transaction will have a positive impact in several areas," said David Gardner, SMD's president. "Our objective has been to dominate the area scan imaging market; I expect that the merged distribution network will accelerate SMD's ability to achieve this objective. The technology transfer will result in continued improvements to our combined product offering." PTB Home |
