CR Technology Announces New
In-Line PCB Inspection System

LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA, Nov. 11 -- CR Technology, a supplier of vision and x-ray systems, has introduced the XRV system -- an automated in-line PCB inspection unit that combines x-ray and vision capabilities.

According to CR Technology, the XRV is designed to automatically and accurately check every feature on assembled PCBs. It uses CCD cameras to check for missing or wrong components, misplacement, polarity, and other visually evident defects. The integrated x-ray capability checks for BGA, microBGA, flip chip, J-leads, and other hidden solder connections that cannot be seen visually.

The XRV uses four CCD video cameras for optical inspection and features an x-ray source, an x-ray-sensitive video camera, and radiation shielding. It interlocks to add x-ray image processing to the optical inspection sequence. The XRV inspects the majority of features on a PCB using its integrated video cameras. Component presence/absence, correct component, position, orientation, and inspection of visible solder joints are all verified using visual images and machine vision algorithms.

CR Technology says that a typical board with 500 components can be programmed in less than 30 minutes. The system is designed to self-learn a PCB by extracting part information from the CAD pick-and-place file and automatically stepping through a known good board. Board program files can then be saved on the local hard drive or on a network. The XRV system can also assist with rework. The results file will highlight which components are incorrect and what the correct part should be.

The CR Technology XRV base price is $145,000 with delivery in 8 weeks. Leasing and financing are available.
