Applied Image Merges With Donnelly Optics

HOLLAND, MI, Dec. 2, 1998 -- Applied Image Group, Inc., of Rochester, NY, and Donnelly Corporation of Holland, MI, have announced a definitive agreement under which Donnelly's wholly owned affiliate, Donnelly Optics Corporation, will merge with Applied Image. The two companies agreed to the transaction on December 1, 1998, with the deal scheduled to close in January 1999.

Applied Image develops and produces opto-imaging products and services for the optical, lighting, photonics, automotive, medical, information, and scanning industries. Donnelly Corporation is an international supplier of automotive mirror, vision, window lighting, and interior trim. The Donnelly Optics Division develops and produces precision injection-molded plastic optical lenses.

"This is an excellent plastic-optics fit for the Applied Image Group," said Bruno Glavich, Applied Images' chairman. "This now completes our single-source supply center concept so that our customers can come directly to us for all of their imaging needs."

Upon completion of the merger, Applied Image will be composed of the following operating divisions:

  • Imaging: Precision-imaged products and services. Applied Image Division manufactures components incorporating precision images such as targets, reticles, encoders, electroforms, standards, and mask services.
  • Coatings: Thin-film vacuum coatings.  Applied Coatings Division specializes in vacuum deposition and thin-film coating techniques, including evaporation, sputtering, CVD, PECVD, and various hybrid systems. Applications include optics, lighting, and medical industries.
  • Glasstec: Optical fabrication and glass machining. Applied Glasstec Division manufactures optical ball lenses, sphered and plano components, and precision-glass and optical-machining services.
  • Optics: Plastic optics. Applied Optics Division (formerly Donnelly Optics) will design and manufacture plastic diffractive and refractive plastic optics. The division utilizes metrology, a materials laboratory, a diamond-turning center, and other manufacturing systems.
