MARKET GROWTH PROJECTED FOR GLOBAL OPTICAL AMPLIFIER COMPONENTS
& SUBSYSTEMS
The global market for optical amplifier components and subsystems
will increase from over $700 million in 2002 to almost $1.1
billion in 2006, according to a recent report published by
Communications Industry Researchers, Inc. (CIR) of Charlottesville,
VA.
However, because CIR does not expect significant WDM (Wavelength
Division Multiplexing) ring deployment to occur in the metro
space until 2004, a major takeoff in metro amps is not anticipated
until 2005.
The report asserts that EDFAs will continue to dominate both
long-haul and metro optical networking over the next five
years. Given their small market share in ultra-long-haul applications,
Raman amps are also expected to grow significantly.

TECHNOLOGY OF THE MONTH
Suitable for a variety of applications including optics and
communications, this multiple layer coating makes it easy
to see through transparent articles without glare and reflections.
This technology produces a coated anti-reflective layer on
a plastic substrate, which results in optical items with excellent
anti-reflection properties such as a reflectance of less than
2.7% and uniform reflection color. Other features include
scratch, impact, chemical, and weather resistance and the
ability to be easily dyed.
Steps in this method are surface pretreatment, hard coat
deposition, and deposition of a fluorine-containing organopolysiloxane-based
top film.

JOINT MANUFACTURING VENTURE SUPPORTS RUSSIA'S GROWING TELECOM
MARKET
Earlier this month Alcatel
(Paris, France) and Sviazinvest (Moscow, Russia) signed a
Memorandum of Understanding conceiving a joint venture to
manufacture optical fiber in the territory of Russia.
The joint venture expects to start shipping products to the
Russian market next year. According to Alcatel this makes
them the first Western company planning to Manufacture high
technology fibers for the Russian telecom market with a Russian
partner.
Estimates show that Russia may triple its demand for optical
fibers by 2005. Svyazinvest, with its subsidiaries, accounts
for a substantial amount of optical fiber purchases in the country.
