MEMS ENABLED OPTICAL CROSS-CONNECT HELPS MANAGE NETWORK TRAFFIC
As optical networks continue to grow and the amount of data
being
transmitted on them increases, so does the interest in finding
new
methods for managing network traffic.
According to Dr. Thomas Kudrle, Lead Engineer of MEMS OXC
at Corning
IntelliSense Corporation, in his article for PTB's May issue,one
of
the most promising methods is the optical cross-connect (OXC).
OXCs are designed to enable the switching of light signals
from a
group of input fibers to a group of output fibers with no
transition
to electrical signals in between.
Also, there are a number of technologies that provide for
direct
optical switching, MEMS is one of the most promising for large-scale
optical cross-connects.

TECHNOLOGY OF THE MONTH: COATING PROVIDES ANTISTATIC PROPERTIES
FOR FILM AND ELECTRONICS PACKAGING
Plastic sheet or web materials of low conductivity can become
electrostatically charged by friction, especially in a dry
atmosphere.
These electrostatic charges may cause sparks and attract dust.
AGFA has developed an antistatic coating that provides moisture-
independent conductivity, protects against electrostatic charging,
and does not require an additional protective layer since
it has a
high mechanical resistance and good adherence.
The coating consists of an aqueous dispersion of a conducting
polymer
(polyethylene-dioxythiophene) and a hydrophobic polymer. Antistatic
properties are maintained even after wet processing of the
material.
The coating can provide antistatic properties for photographic
film,
packaging material for electronic components, or any other
object,
such as a cathode ray tube, that needs an antistatic coating.

PATENT NEWS: XTERA GRANTED US PATENT FOR NONLINEAR FIBER
AMPLIFIERS
Xtera Communications (Allen, TX) and the University of Michigan
have
been jointly awarded United States Patent No. 6,239,902, which
relates
to Raman amplification including Distributed Raman Amplification
(DRA)
when used with the widely deployed types of NZ-DSF fiber.
Xtera has
exclusive rights for the patent.

INDUSTRY UPDATE
IntelCore Technologies
(North Grafton, MA) has officially changed its
name to Verrillon Inc. The name change was implemented in
conjunction
with the company's move to its new headquarters in Massachusetts.
C-COR.net
(State College, PA), a provider of broadband communications
technology, systems, and services, has agreed to acquire Philips
Broadband Networks (PBN) from Royal Philips Electronics (Netherlands).
The transaction is expected to be completed before year end.
NP Photonics
(Tucson, AZ) has acquired Parvenu Inc., a Delaware Corp.,
which previously acquired Solus Micro Technologies' (Westlake
Village,
CA) Compliant MEMs (CMEMs) technology, intellectual property,
and
tunable filter products. Parvenu will operate as a wholly
owned
subsidiary of NP Photonics.
